In the United States, more than 16 % of women and 5 % of men over the age of 50 have one or more diagnosed spine fractures caused by osteoporosis. An estimated 700, 000 VCFs due to osteoporosis, 50, 000 due to cancer, and 100, 000 due to trauma occur each year in the United States. Until recently, conservative treatments and pain medication were the only alternatives to highly invasive surgery prone to significant complications and unpredictable outcome. The introduction of minimally invasive surgical alternatives, such as the procedure developed by Kyphon Inc., has changed the VFC treatment paradigm. Built around the bone tamp concept, these instrumentations allow the physician to partially restore the vertebra height prior to the injection of bone cement. The VEXIM solution, based on the new concept of an expandable intra-vertebral implant, shall provide a more predictable and reliable surgical outcome.
